Abstract. In this talk, I examine Friedrich Paulsen’s interpretation of Kant’s thought in Immanuel Kant. Sein Leben und seine Lehre (1898) and "Kants Verhältnis zur Metaphysik" (1900). I argue that, attentive to recent editions of Kant’s Nachlass, Paulsen in these works revised his initial epistemological standpoint and developed the first metaphysical reading of critical philosophy. I then discuss the reception of his groundbreaking views by prominent Kant scholars of the time such as Hans Vaihinger, and consider the broader impact of the ensuing controversy on Kantian studies.
