In my lecture, I will offer an overview of the main periods and topics of the Hungarian philosophy in the ‘long 19th century’, within two symbolic milestones: from the beginning of the Controversy on Kant (1792), until the death of the founder of a school of neo-Kantian axiology, Károly Böhm (1911). I will place emphasis on several special features of Hungarian philosophy, e.g. the different religious cultural background of philosophy (Catholic, Lutheran and Calvinists schools); the role of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (established in 1825) in the formation of a secular philosophical culture, a modern philosophical terminology, and a public scholarly sphere out of the traditional institutions (schools and churches). I will offer an overview of the main consequences of this institutional background, e.g. the central importance of the philosophical controversies; a conscious self-reflection incarnated in the early historiography of Hungarian philosophy (from 1835), and a strong interest in social and political questions. In the last section of my lecture, I will touch several open questions: What is the reason why those particular philosophical trends are over- or under-represented in comparison with the neighbouring national philosophical cultures? How can be narrated the Hungarian (and any other East-Central European) philosophy within a European (and global) framework?
